Since Bulgaria adopted the euro the bank keeps the lev notes in the section of notes withdrawn from circulation whose exchange period has not expired. The obverse shows a portrait of Stefan Stambolov, the vertical inscriptions «Стефан Стамболов» and «1854–1895» and the denomination in figures and words. The reverse shows the building of the National Assembly and fragments of the Eagles' Bridge and the Lions' Bridge, together with the denomination in figures and words.
A banknote of the Bulgarian National Bank, the 2007 design. The most interesting security features are an anti-copy stripe — a holographic band — a lion and an eagle replace one another as the viewing angle changes and the figure «20» pulsates through different colours; the demetallised edge carries the minitext «БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА»; a security thread embedded in the paper — a metallised thread with the minitext «БНБ 20», legible from either side against the light; it surfaces on the back, changes colour from red to green when tilted, and through a polarising filter shows slanted black and white stripes; and a watermark — a halftone image of the portrait from the front and the contrasting initials «БНБ».
The Bulgarian lev is collected by the year of the design: for one and the same portrait the 1999–2009 note and the new-series note of 2019–2020 differ in their security features and sometimes in the tint of the paper. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
